Daniel Levy - Former Chairman

That is my point about leadership though. Understanding the gaps in your own portfolio is critically important to being a great leader. You bring in people with those skills. Levy didn't. He just made his own football operational decisions and didn't hire into his own gaps.

Be interesting to see whether people feel we would have had van Hecke closed at £52m in a Levy tenure. I think most would sense probably not to be fair. Whether that is fair on him or not is sort of irrelevant. We saw so much smoke over the years in these situations to draw that conclusion.

There is absolutely no way Levy would have sanctioned that deal.

We’ve paid three times what he’s worth at least, I find it very worrying.

Sorry but you’re either too young to remember (I don’t know how old you are) you misremember or you don’t want to remember because it doesn’t fit your narrative.

I remember the protests as I was part of them along with a bunch of others on the old SIMB message board (I could be wrong here but I think that @thfcsteff may have been involved as well - though it might have been a different steff?

The fans wanted Sugarvout because of his lack of ambition for the club. It was several years after Venables had departed

So you were comparing Spurs at 14th back then with say Man United in the same way people are comparing Tottenham to making the deals Liverpool and Arsenal are now? More fool you I say if so..

Im not miss remembering, Sugar was hated, I was going home and away with my old man then in my teens and there was never a sustained protest movement of any note.

Yes you got the odd nutters out the gates spitting at his car and people in about numbers of 20 there every week because they were persistent, but there were no 1000 odd protests

"Stand up if you hate Sugar" came in about his last season from memory but again it was fairly infrequent and no real difference to what Levy had last season. TBH

We haven’t really overpaid, though, have we? We’ve paid a premium to get the player now and make sure nobody else did. If he’d stayed this summer, there’s every chance someone else would have picked him up in January for £25–30m. We made the move early and paid extra to secure the man we wanted.

And it won’t be £50m upfront either. You can almost guarantee a sizeable chunk of that fee will be made up of add-ons linked to things like qualifying for the Champions League or winning trophies. If those targets are met, the extra revenue generated will effectively help pay for him anyway.

In January we could have got him on a pre contract for nothing next season right?

The reports say no add ons.

The point was, DL clearly raised yours and others expectations to keep talking the comparisons you have fot the last 10 years or so. Absolutely no chance you were comparing us to that level of club when we were finishing 14th, 11th &10th the years before he took the reigns.
Err I started following Spurs in the 80s, we finished 4th twice and 3rd 3 times with 1 serious league title challenge that decade and won the UEFA and FA Cups when they genuinely still prestigious competitions.

Yes the following decade was awful but when I started following Spurs we were one of the big 5, so yes we fell from that position but I would have compared us to those teams at the time. Even in the Sugar era it took some time before we really began to lose our status, it wasn't until the mid to late 90s when we were truly on the brick heap.

So yes you're right the era directly before ENIC we wouldn't compared but Sugar's reign is hardly the be all and end all of Spurs and we were considered a sleeping giant for a reason.

Which is what I am talking about. The club that was taken over was a long way off the top 5, even further from the successful ones that had been winning titles and hording trophies.

I certainly wasnt looking at the likes of United and Arsenal were signing and thinking we were shopping in the same market, let along aisle

If people were then I suggest their expectations then were fcuked

I’m sure January pre contract is only for non UK teams.

Also he would have a pick of many teams if that was the case, we signed him now because no one else wanted to pay the money.

I read it as £52m with no add on’s making it a higher price, i believe there will still be additional clauses within that £52m.

Fair enough if that was only the case for non PL teams.

If there was a bidding war against another club that would be interesting to know.

We fell away at the worst possible time.

We lost more ground in 10 years than anyone else could have in a hundred.

The game completely changed and we were left behind.
Yep, getting it handed to us with records no one wanted agaisnt them big clubs, not getting a result at places for years on years.

If fans ambitions back then finishing 14th and 30/points a season behind the big players were the same and under DL after 10 mostly in the CL then either their expectations were off then, or wrong 20 years later.

Anyway, this has all been said before and the blokes gone.

No point losing a summer debating the same sh1t

One write-up said it’s a 20% sell-on clause against any profit we make in a sale (as opposed to the whole amount)
